Rare Planetary Alignment: A Space Parade In The Sky

A planetary alignment, commonly referred to as a “space parade,” is set to take place on Saturday, June 29, for astronomers and stargazers in the United States. According to NASA, a rare opportunity exists for people to witness Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune, and Saturn aligning in the sky before sunrise. Preston Dyches, a public engagement specialist for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and host of the “What’s Up” monthly video series, explained that the alignment will resemble a parade, with the planets forming a straight line and appearing to march across the night sky. This phenomenon is also known as a large planetary alignment.

While astronomers initially promised a dazzling parade on June 3, Dyches and Andrew Fazekas, communications manager for Astronomers Without Borders… advised against trying to view it due to the sun’s position and the timing being during the first workday of the week. Fazekas noted that people may be able to view the alignment on Friday, “but the moon’s position will differ from Saturday.” The closest thing to a planet parade is indeed on Saturday, “emphasized Dyches.” According to the program SkySafari Pro… the following planets will be visible during the planetary parade on June 29. The information in this article was first published in USA TODAY.
